Since we launched our campaign on 25th February 2006 to save Petersham Nurseries more than 8200 people have signed our petition (on-line and in person). To date we have also received over 211 letters of support, whilst the Council have only received 25 letters of objection, written by the same 17 signatories. In the messages of support posted below you will find examples of the sentiments expressed within them, for which we are truly grateful.
In their correspondence, the Ham and Petersham Association and the Riverside ward councillors repeatedly refer to anonymous neighbours, complainants, some residents, people and members of the public who have made complaints about Petersham Nurseries. These anonymous people are treated as the Voice of the Public and on their say-so the Council have issued us with an eviction notice from our car-park and have objected to our restaurant.
On the other hand, we have over 8200 people who are prepared to show their support openly. The majority of these supporters are local people who enjoy having the nurseries in their community so much so that they have written letters to the Richmond upon Thames Council in our defence. It is about time they started to listen to the real Voice of the Public.
